Few Good Men Does It Again

Brian Gath and Few Good Men on the way to their dashing win in The Sky Channel Pure Steel
He won’t be lining up when the BIG6 Hunter Cup is run, but Few Good Men enhanced his status as one of Victoria’s top standing start performers with a dashing win in Saturday night's $20,000 The Sky Channel Pure Steel at Ballarat.
The gutsy five-year-old backed up his 1:55.5 track record win over the mobile mile at Shepparton last Saturday night with a 2:05.7 victory over the longer 2710-metre journey at Bray Raceway.
Legendary reinsman Brian Gath, who earlier this season won the St Arnaud Cup behind Few Good Men, was full of praise for the Peter Tonkin-trained son of Panorama.
“He’s a great horse who’s very hard to get past once he’s in front and he’s won a lot of races that way,” he said.
“He went 1:55 last week at Shepparton and then came out again and did over the longer journey tonight, so it was a great effort.”
Few Good Men, who isn’t entered for the Hunter Cup, denied a number of rivals their last chance to stake a claim for a berth in the $400,000 Group 1 event this Saturday night when he led all of the way.
A trademark B Gath drive secured some moderate sectionals in the first half of the race, but the $4.40 favourite still zipped home the last quarter in a slick 27.4 seconds for a strong win.
The gelding held off last year’s Hunter Cup third placegetter, Report For Duty ($5.40), who raced outside Few Good Men for the last lap and a half, by two metres with the fast-finishing Broadway Play ($7.80) a short half head back in third spot.
