The Ouyen Trotters Cup isn’t the most prestigious race on the Victorian harness calendar, but it has proven a crucial one for Red Samurai.

Victory in the $10,000 event at Tabcorp Park on January 15 secured the Clinton Welsh-trained seven-year-old the last spot in the SEW-Eurodrive Inter Dominion Trotting Championship.
Harness Racing Victoria released the final list of the ranking for the series, which begins at Ballarat this Saturday night, on Monday morning with Red Samurai leaping from a distant 40th in order of entry to 24th position.
There will be two $40,000 semi finals of 12 runners each with the first six home progressing to the $250,000 Group 1 final at Moonee Valley on Saturday night, February 6.
Saturday night’s Albion Park winner Sunana Asset (33 to 23), fellow Queenslander Kasyanov (32 to 22), Kyvalley Mac (27 to 17) and Cillas Earl (26 to 16) were others to jump at least 10 spots and secure their semi final spot.
This year’s series will be an all-Australian affair after Sno’s Big Boy joined fellow Kiwi stars Springbank Richard, Sovereignty and Galleons Sunset as recent scratchings.
Defending champion Sundons Gift, an outstanding winner of Saturday night’s Cochran Cup at Shepparton, remains the top seed ahead of Chris Lang-trained stablemate Skyvalley.
Rising superstar Don King, Acacia Ridge and Save A Sixpence round out the top five in the rankings.
